Goji: Nature’s Secret Weapon

By Teresa Carr

In some remote countries in the world living to be 100 years or longer is not uncommon. If Ponce de Leon looked for the fabled “fountain of youth” we assume he looked in the wrong place. One such place is a 1900-mile long mountain range called the Himalayas. The native’s secret is found in a tiny red-orange fruit the Goji Berry or Wolfberry that grows wild in the foothills of the Himalayas. Some researchers say it might be the world’s most powerful food. Just recently it has been a mystery to the Western world for centuries until now. It had been part of traditional Asian culture for countless generations.

What makes the Goji powerful is that it contains antioxidants that is known to defend the body against free radicals and helps support the body’s immune system. In research testing it was proven to stand out among blueberries, papaya and others for its antioxidant potency. It has been called the fountain of youth because of its extraordinary properties to slow aging. The potent ingredients are four rare polysaccharides that aren’t found in any other food on the planet. These polysaccharides stimulate the pituitary gland to produce human growth hormone, a powerful healing and anti-aging agent. Goji has the richest source of carotenoids. Goji contains a wide spectrum of trace minerals and 18 amino acids. Goji contains 500 times more Vitamin C by weight then oranges. Other components that are notable are beta-sitosterol, which is an effective anti-inflammatory agent, and organic germanium, which has substantial anti-cancer activity. Goji berries also contain anthocyanins as do other superfruits as açaí  and mangosteen which helps defend DNA against damage and has shown an ability to keep cancer cells from spending.

Goji Berries have been used to treat obesity, sugar cravings, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety, cardiovascular disease and irregularity. Goji supports eye health and improve vision; protect the liver and support normal kidney function; strength muscles and bones; improve fertility and alleviate sexual dysfunction; help to maintain healthy blood pressure and blood sugar; strengthens the immune system; increase longevity and protect from premature aging etc. Goji berries are so fragile at harvest time that they are never touched by hand as they will oxidize and turn black while fresh. Instead they are shaken onto mats, and then dried in the shade. In the market they can cost from $16 per pound. Goji can be found in juices. You can make fresh and delicious Goji smoothies with your home blender, or add them to your breakfast cereal.
